School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering

The School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering of NCEPU was originally the Department of Power when the university was founded in 1958. Over the past 60 years, the school and the university have been developing and growing together through changes and adjustments. With the inclusive and balanced spirit, the school has derived a number of new majors and new disciplines, and nurtured a number of departments, providing an inexhaustible 'power' for the development and growth of the university. In 2005, School of Mechanical Engineering was merged to form the School of Energy and Power Engineering. In 2009, it was renamed the School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering.



Through continuous accumulation, the school has steadily improved its strength, increasingly enriched its connotation and highlighted its traditional advantages. The school has five first-level programs including Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology, and 13 second-level programs. Among them, the Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics is the first-level discipline doctoral programs, and postdoctoral research station is set up. The Thermal Engineering is a national key discipline, and Engineering Thermophysics, Power Machinery and Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory are provincial and ministerial key disciplines.


The discipline level of the school has always been in the domestic first-class level. In 2017, in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education of the P.R.C, the discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics of our school was evaluated as A- (tied for fifth among universities in China), and it is the core component of the 'Energy Power Science and Engineering' of 'First-class universities and disciplines of the world' in the school.


The school currently has 129 full-time teachers and 94 with senior titles. Among them, there are 2 dual-employed academicians, 10 national high-level talents, 2 '973 Program' chief scientists, 2 academic leaders of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, and 10 talents from the new century outstanding talent support programs, which have formed a high-quality teacher team with reasonable structure, active academic thinking, unity and cooperation, good teacher ethics and higher teaching and scientific research level.


The school has made great achievements in characteristic majors, excellent courses, experimental teaching demonstration center, innovative experimental plan for college students, discipline competitions, innovative experimental area of talent training mode, teaching research and teaching reform, etc. It has won 1 second prize for national teaching achievements, 5 first prizes and 2 second prizes for provincial and ministerial teaching achievements. In 2007, 'Thermal Energy and Power Engineering' was included in the first batch of characteristic major construction programs of national universities. In the same year, the 'School-Enterprise Joint Order-type Talent Training Model Innovation Pilot Zone' was identified as a national talent training mode innovation experimental zone. In 2009, 'Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering' was approved as a national experimental teaching demonstration center. In 2011, the training mode of innovative class and practice class of 'Excellent Engineer Training Program' was implemented. In 2012, the National Engineering Practice Education Center of Power Plant was approved. In 2018, 'Wu Zhonghua College' was established to comprehensively upgrade the innovative talent training mode. Through the implementation of the strict love program, the responsibility teacher system for large classes, and the training program for famous teachers, a number of famous teachers have emerged.


The school currently has a batch of high-level research bases such as the National Engineering Research Center for Thermal Power Generation, the Key Laboratory of Power Station Energy Transfer and System of the Ministry of Education, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Pollutant Monitoring and Control in Thermal Power Production Processes, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Low-grade Energy Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer. Since 2010, the school has won more than 30 National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology and Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Awards, and undertaken and completed more than 100 vertical projects and more than 400 horizontal projects of national level and above provincial and ministerial level such as '973', '863' and National Natural Science Foundation of China, with an accumulated research fund of RMB 470 million. The school has formed strong research directions in advanced energy system thermodynamics and integration optimization, multiphase flow and heat and mass transfer, pollutant removal, power station equipment status monitoring and fault diagnosis.


The school conducts active exchanges and cooperation both at home and abroad, and has established good cooperative relations with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Poland and other countries. The '111' Talent Introduction Base of 'Clean Conversion and Efficient Utilization of Coal' runs smoothly; it cooperates with Purdue University (Northwest Campus) and other universities for undergraduate education; it trains energy talents for countries along 'The Belt and Road'. Relying on its academic advantages, it organized high-level international academic exchanges such as 'Symposium on Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Power System'.


Since 2008, the school's undergraduates have won 253 national awards, more than 300 awards above ministerial and provincial-level and more than 50 patents in science and technology competitions such as National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving & Emission Reduction, The Challenge Cup and National College Mechanical Innovation Competition, maintaining a high-level  of talent training quality. The postgraduate training scale of the discipline of 'Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics' ranks among the top in China. The major of 'Power Engineering' has obtained the qualification for training of the first batch of masters of engineering (equipment supervisors) in China. The school has established postgraduate workstations with more than 20 electric power research units. The postgraduates of the school have become the main force of the school’s scientific research, and the quality of training has won high recognition from the society and employers.


In the past 60 years, the school has taken the national power development and social demand as its own responsibility, shouldered the important task and mission of the talent training and scientific research of electric power in different periods. It has cultivated and delivered more than 30,000 talents of various specialties, and has enjoyed high praise and reputation in the energy and electricity field and the society. During the '13th Five-Year Plan' period, the faculty and students of the school will continue to uphold the spirit of NCEPU, keep going and provide abundant 'power' support for the discipline of 'Energy and Electric Power Science and Engineering' to enter the world-class ranks, and for NCEPU to become a high-level research-oriented university with distinctive characteristics.
