North China Electric Power University (NCEPU)  is a nationally key university directly under the Ministry of Education, designated as a key institution under the national “Project 211” and “Project 985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform.” In 2017, NCEPU was selected for the national “Double First-Class” initiative, focusing on developing its energy and power science and engineering discipline cluster. This marked the commencement of a new journey toward building world-class disciplines and a high-level research-oriented university. In 2022, NCEPU successfully passed the first-round evaluation of the “Double First-Class” initiative and was included in the list of institutions for the second-round development. Its electrical engineering discipline was selected for the second-round “Double First-Class” construction. In 2025, NCEPU convened the Third Party Congress of the Communist Party of China NCEPU, establishing the ambitious goal of “building a world-class university with distinctive strengths in energy and power.”

Founded in Beijing in 1958 as Beijing Electric Power Institute, NCEPU was long administered by the State Power Administration before transferring to the Ministry of Education in 2003. NCEPU is now jointly established and co-managed by the Ministry of Education and a council comprising twelve major power enterprises: State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., China Datang Corporation Limited, China Huadian Corporation Limited, State Energy Investment Group Co., Ltd., China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., China Three Gorges Corporation, China General Nuclear Power Group, China Power Construction Corporation, China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd., Guangdong Energy Group Co., Ltd., and the China Electricity Council. After over six decades of development, NCEPU has cultivated the “Huadian Spirit” of self-reliance, unity, dedication, and pursuit of excellence, alongside the educational philosophy of “building NCEPU through disciplines, strengthening it with talent, revitalizing it through research, and pursuing distinctive development.”

NCEPU's headquarters are located in Beijing, with a separate Baoding campus, both managed under an integrated system. It comprises 25 schools and departments, including the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Energy, Power and Mechanical Engineering, School of Control and Computer Engineering, School of Economics and Management, and School of New Energy. With over 3,200 faculty and staff, NCEPU enrolls more than 25,000 full-time undergraduates and 17,000 graduate students. The campus spans over 1,800 acres with a total floor area exceeding 1 million square meters.

NCEPU adheres to the principle of “building the institution through disciplines,” focusing on establishing an energy and power discipline system that is “guided by the dual carbon goals, prioritizes emerging energy disciplines, builds upon traditional strengths, and is supported by arts and sciences.” Electrical Engineering was selected for the second round of the “Double First-Class” initiative. Both Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics achieved A and A- ratings in the fourth and fifth rounds of national discipline evaluations. NCEPU hosts the Beijing High-End Discipline in Clean Energy and 25 provincial/ministerial-level key disciplines. The Engineering discipline ranks among the top 40 globally and within the top 1‰ worldwide. Additionally, Computer Science, Environmental/Ecological Sciences, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Social Sciences are all ranked within the top 1% globally in the ESI rankings. In the four major international rankings—ARWU, US News, THE, and QS—four disciplines rank within the global top 50, and ten disciplines rank within the global top 100. NCEPU operates 7 postdoctoral research stations, 10 first-level doctoral programs, and 4 professional doctoral programs, alongside 24 first-level master's programs and 17 professional master's programs. These span eight disciplinary categories—engineering, management, science, law, literature, economics, education, and interdisciplinary studies—forming a comprehensive educational system for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral training.

NCEPU vigorously implements a talent-driven development strategy, continuously refining a comprehensive system for talent recruitment, cultivation, utilization, and service. This has fostered a high-caliber faculty characterized by proactive initiative, excellent quality, and balanced structure. Currently, there are 2,257 full-time faculty members, including 459 holding senior professional titles and 915 holding associate senior professional titles. NCEPU boasts three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 100 other high-level talents, and multiple high-caliber research teams.

Deeply committed to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education, NCEPU has developed a distinctive talent cultivation approach characterized by “solid foundations, emphasis on practice, strong capabilities, and pursuit of innovation.” Since its founding, it has cultivated over 360,000 high-caliber talents with both integrity and competence for national economic and social development. Selected as one of the “Third Batch of National Colleges of Excellence for Engineers,” NCEPU became one of the first institutions approved by the Ministry of Education to implement the “Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program.” It has been designated as a National Demonstration Base for Innovative Talent Cultivation and one of the first “National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Bases” by the Ministry of Education. NCEPU initiated the establishment of the “Industry-University Alliance for Cultivating Outstanding Engineers in the Power Sector,” serving as the base unit for the Student Competition Working Committee Office of the China Electric Power Education Association. NCEPU currently offers 56 undergraduate programs, including 21 national-level first-class majors, 11 national-level characteristic majors, and 4 majors related to national strategic emerging industries. It boasts 30 national-level first-class courses, 3 national-level ideological and political education demonstration courses, 2 national-level teaching teams, 1 national-level distinguished teacher, 3 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 3 National Engineering Practice Education Centers, 3 National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Centers, and 1 National Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone.

NCEPU adheres to the “Four Orientations,” serves the nation's major priorities, and focuses on building strategic research capabilities. It actively participates in the construction of the national innovation system, continuously enhances scientific and technological innovation capacity, and has overcome numerous key technical challenges in the energy and power sectors. It has made significant contributions to advancing high-level self-reliance and strength in energy and power science and technology, achieving remarkable results in critical fields such as new energy, ultra-high voltage, smart grids, clean coal power, and nuclear power. NCEPU currently hosts 4 substantive national-level research platforms, 1 national-level international science and technology cooperation base, 52 provincial/ministerial-level research and innovation platforms, 5 Beijing municipal international cooperation bases, and 8 discipline-specific innovation and talent introduction bases. Additionally, aligning with disciplinary strengths, NCEPU independently established 36 university-level research institutions. Since the 10th Five-Year Plan period, NCEPU has undertaken over 5,500 vertical research projects, including the National Key R&D Program, National Major Science and Technology Special Projects, “973” and “863” Programs, National Science and Technology Support Program, and National Natural Science Foundation projects. It has received more than 490 national and provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards.

NCEPU steadfastly pursues the path of strengthening itself through industry-academia collaboration. Leveraging NCEPU Council platform, it has established a multi-tiered industry-academia cooperation model, continuously optimizing its collaborative framework and forging strategic partnerships with over 100 major enterprises. Maintaining close ties with the industry, it has jointly established key university-enterprise collaboration platforms such as the Energy Internet College, the Joint Research Institute for Smart Energy, the Joint Laboratory for Offshore Wind Power and Smart Energy Systems, the Joint Research Institute for Efficient, Clean, and Intelligent Power Generation, and the Smart Power Station Technology Innovation Center. These platforms jointly undertake major R&D projects, accelerating the development and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. Innovating university-local government collaboration, we have established multi-faceted government-industry-academia-research cooperation platforms. Strategic cooperation agreements have been signed with over 20 local governments, deepening exchanges and cooperation across multiple fields within strategic emerging industries. This has made positive contributions to promoting regional technological innovation and advancing local economic and social development. We actively promote inter-university collaborative innovation, participating as a key founding member in the establishment of the Beijing High-Tech University Alliance. NCEPU actively integrates into national strategies, industry development, regional economic growth, and the broader “Double First-Class” initiative, comprehensively enhancing its external cooperation and social service capabilities.

NCEPU continuously strengthens international collaboration, deepens Sino-foreign cultural exchanges, and accelerates the advancement of its internationalization efforts. It strives to expand its network of world-class university partners and the Belt and Road partner university network, comprehensively implementing student exchange programs, faculty visits, and research collaborations, while continuously increasing the scale and quality of international students in China. NCEPU actively implements the Belt and Road Initiative, spearheading the establishment of the China-Central Asia Energy and Power Innovation Alliance, which was collectively unveiled at the inaugural China-Central Asia Education Ministers' Meeting. It proactively undertakes national diplomatic missions, serving as the Chinese lead institution for energy transition under the China-Arab States Universities 10+10 Cooperation Program and for energy studies within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University. It actively builds cooperative platforms and hosts multiple national-level foreign aid training programs. NCEPU actively promotes Chinese culture. The Confucius Institute at Western Kentucky University in the United States is one of the largest comprehensive Confucius Institutes in North America and globally.

Facing the great new era of national rejuvenation and building a strong nation, and standing at a historic new starting point that connects the past with the future, NCEPU will always hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics. adhere to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its guiding principle, fully implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and all plenary sessions of the 20th CPC Central Committee, and thoroughly execute the strategic plans outlined at NCEPU's Third Party Congress. It will courageously shoulder the mission of building China into an education powerhouse and an energy powerhouse, striving with greater vigor and more pragmatic measures to compose a new chapter in the development of a world-class university with distinctive strengths in energy and power. It will make new and greater contributions to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country and the full advancement of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!
