School of Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering

The School of Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering originates from the School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering. In 2007, China's first School of Renewable Energy was established with the support of the National Energy Administration, the Ministry of Education and China's renewable energy industry in order to meet the needs of professionals for the development of renewable energy in China, and the discipline of Hydraulic Engineering was included in the School of Renewable Energy. With the continuous development and expansion of the industry, the School of Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering was established in 2020, opening a new journey of the discipline construction of hydraulic engineering.


The school has the first-level discipline doctoral and master program of Hydraulic Engineering and has two undergraduate majors of "Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering" and "Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering". The school currently has 444 students, and has trained more than 1,200 hydraulic engineering talents for the country. The school has a hydropower teaching and research section and a hydrology teaching and research section. There are 33 faculty members, including 12 professors and doctoral supervisors, and 9 associate professors.


Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Sources, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Safety and Clean Utilization, and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of Regional Energy System Optimization, the school has successively built 3 experimental centers of hydropower system operation simulation and risk analysis, hydropower station and geotechnical engineering, and hydraulic and river simulation and 14 laboratories. In terms of sustainable utilization and management of water resources, flood prevention and disaster reduction theory, water safety analysis, and cross-basin hydropower system development technology, the school has gradually formed a hydropower energy research field featuring "big electric power". The school has been approved for 3 programs with national scientific and technological support during the 11th Five-Year Plan period, 3 major scientific and technological projects during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, 15 national key research and development program projects, nearly 20 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 80 projects entrusted by enterprises, with a total research funding of RMB 160 million. The school has won 1 second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, 4 first prizes, 7 second prizes, and 10 third prizes in provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards and natural science awards. It has published 13 monographs.


In the face of the urgent need for higher education in building a modern socialist power in the new era, the school will stay true to its original aspiration, keep in mind its mission, and focus on the fundamental task of cultivating people by virtue. Always taking the world-class level as the direction of its efforts, and in accordance with the country's strategic needs for energy, water resources and the environment, the school continues to innovate and update the content of disciplines, and continuously improve the education, teaching and scientific research capabilities, making the School of Hydraulic and Hydroelectric Engineering an important talent training and scientific research base in the field of hydropower engineering in China.
